The Zikhang Library

Initially born to host the texts brought from Tibet by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and those required to perform his studies and research, the Zikhang Library today gathers more than 9000 texts, books and magazines in several languges. The name, Zikhang, means "House of Zi (gzi)", the agate stone to which Tibetan traditions attributes special properties as an amulet as well as material and symbolic connotations.
The central core of the Library hosts unique and rare texts primarily related to Dzogchen, one of the most complete in the world, but also to medicine and other doctrines and sciences traditional of Tibet, resulting from the expeditions and researches led by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu in more that 40 years of work.
One of the central collections in this section is the works of Changchub Dorje, root guru of Chögyal Namhai Norbu. Around this core, during the years, a large number of texts in Tibetan language has been gathered, both in the traditional dpe cha and western deb format as well as several books and magazines of secondary literature, academic and not, specifically related to Tibet but also to China, India and the East in general.
The Library gathers also some original manuscripts by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu in Tibetan and their translation in several languages and the complete works of the Shang Shung Publications.
The Library online catalogue, still in progress, can be found here. The catalogue is being updated as texts are studied and organized by sector. Currently the re-organization and cataloguing  of the Tibetan traditional dpe cha section has almost come to its completeness: more than 2000 volumes are now divided by school (bon, rnying ma, sa skya, bka brgyud, bka’ gdams, dge lugs, ris med, jo nang), each with its own specifics (authors, genre, etc) and sub-categories, History of Dharma and Biographies (chos ‘byung e rbam thar), History and Law (lo rgyus e khrims yig), Places and Divinities (gnas yig, gnas bdag), Gesar Epics, Medicine (gso rig), Astrology (rtsis), Grammar (sgra rig), Art and Architecture (bzo rig).
The reorganization by subject and categories will continue in the other sectors durng the entire course of 2014, stretching to 2015,  while manuscript works, partially already scanned, are kept in a separate location.
