Enrico Dell’Angelo – International Governance and Direction

I studied Tibetology at the University of Napoli with Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and have been working for many years on the Tibetan Plateau to support the way of life of the local communities and the continuation of Tibetan culture. Having contributed to the establishment of the Institute, today I work towards the implementation of an international governance that can foster international cooperation and support the continuous development of our programmes.

Gaetano Ruvolo – Shang Shung Publications Direction and Management

After graduating in foreign languages and literature in Rome in 1978, I was offered a scholarship for a Master's degree in Connecticut, US, majoring in English and American literature. I then started my working life in a publishing house in Rome in 1982 and that is why I developed my collaboration with Shang Shung Publications in those years, until the early 1990s. In total I have spent 30 years working in corporate environments, mainly entertainment multinationals, in management roles within Operations and General Management, which allowed me to know in depth the mechanics and dynamics of markets and organizations. In 2011 I left Sony and started dedicating my time to consultancy, training and Coaching, which I consider the soul of the former two, helping people to find the path that leads to the development of their potentialities. I have re-joined the Shang Shung Publications in 2013 with the intention of developing its organization and structure it adequately to reach a wider market of potential readers everywhere in the world. I live with my wife and my small dog Brunello in Formello, very close to Rome.  My dog name is highly suggestive of my passion for Italian quality wines and good food, which together with Tai Chi and Tibetan culture are an essential part of my personal life.

Maria Grazia Testa – Programmes Direction and Management – Italy

I started my collaboration with the Shang Shung Institute in 2011: at first I was dedicating my free time to it, delivering trainings to the staff worldwide on everything management but later the grip of this inspiring organization had the better on me and I happily obliged, packing my world business traveler life and moving it into the heart of Tuscany. And of the Institute. Today I am responsible for the direction and management of the Archive, Library and Educational Programs within SSI Italy, with the goal to improve the fruition of the knowledge available through these programs and the belief that any disruption of the integrity and availability of the insights and comprehension matured within this minority culture would be a loss for humankind.

Having studied humanities I started young working as a researcher in the field of lineage bound religions. I then turned my skills and expertise (!) to Information Technology, first as a systems administrator and later as an expert in designing and managing complex organizations, knowledge, processes and infrastructures. For the past 10 years I have been working in global management and direction roles, specializing in the transformation and transition of large enterprises throughout the world. I have dedicated much of my free time collaborating with smaller no profit organizations and institutions. I live with the biggest wonder yet in my life, my daughter and, in spite of bookworming and geeking most of the time, I dearly love people, dance and sunshine.

Judith Allan – Programmes Direction and Management – United Kingdom

I have been a Director of SSI UK since its inception in March 2010. I am responsible for planning courses, academic lectures at SOAS, the University of London, and elsewhere as well as two conferences which we have held together with SOAS: Bon, ShangShung and Early Tibet in 2011 and a conference on Padmasambhava in 2013. Furthermore I am financially and legally responsible for the running of Shang Shung UK. I am totally committed to SSI because of the importance of keeping Tibetan culture alive, present and relevant today, as well as creating a forum for important academic research through lectures, conferences and publications. Through SSI UK we can reach out to a wide variety of people drawn to different aspects of Tibetan culture, whether it is through thangka painting courses, talks on thangka preservation, Tibetan calligraphy, Tibetan Dance, Tibetan history and Shang Shung, Yantra Yoga etc. Since 1974 I have been closely connected with the Tibetan Community in the UK and related organisations.  I studied Tibetan language and literature at SOAS in the 1970s with Professor Snellgrove and Philip Denwood.  I have worked frequently for Tibet organisations not only on a voluntary basis but also professionally. In the 1990's I worked as Secretary to the All Party Parliamentary group for Tibet in the Palace of Westminster. Later I was Director for APPT, Alternative Technology for Tibetans. I have also been involved with organising exhibitions on Tibetan art and photography, as well as trips to Tibet. Otherwise I have worked in publishing and have written several books, as well as editing the Dzogchen Journal UK for the past 12 years. I live in northwest London, very close to Hampstead Heath, and walk there almost daily with my dog. I like cooking, gardening, cinema and read widely. I also enjoy poetry and literary readings and all the rich cultural life that London has to offer. Besides London, I love being in the country and spend a lot of time in north Norfolk as well as Wales at our beautiful mountain retreat centre, Kunselling.

Judith passed away on March 26th 2014. To her goes our deepest love and respect.

Richard Steven – Programmes General Management – United Kingdom

I have been working for Shang Shung UK since 2010.  One of my first jobs was formatting and upgrading the website, including setting up the facilities for the Shang Shung UK bookstore, for which I was responsible for the last three years.  I also have been involved in the setting up of our full events programme over the past four years and the coordination of booking for courses, talks and conferences in collaboration with Judith Allan.  My particular skill is in the area of computer technology, as well as being responsible for the design and circulation of publicity materials, including all media outlets such as Facebook etc.   In addition, I have been responsible for recording talks and conferences and making these available on our website.
It is my view that Tibetan culture has a great deal to offer our present day society which is focused on materialism.   Tibetan culture is infused with an inherent spirituality which is transmitted through all the Five Sciences and I am particularly interested in promoting the arts and literature aspect. My professional background is in Chinese medicine, massage and computer technology. I have also trained as an English teacher for foreign language students and worked professionally as a musician. I was brought up in Cornwall which is a wild and remote corner of the British Isles. I still have a great love of nature and need to get away from city for periods of time.  My passions are for walking, travelling, playing music and composing.

Kirill Shilov – Programmes Direction and Management, Shang Shung Editions General Direction – Russia

I am the general director of Shang Shung Editions in Russia and one of the board members of the Shang Shung Institute. I am also deeply involved in translation, edition and typographic design. I lead several projects for SSI Russia, such as public events, courses and archive projects. Since 1995 I have been working as publications manager, translator, editor, typographic designer and even IT consultant for different Buddhist publishing houses and projects. Since 2000 I am a founding member and executive director of Uddiyana Cultural Center and Uddiyana Publications. I was born and grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, one of the most beautiful cities of the Northern Europe, which I welcome everyone to visit. I like music since it makes me happy, I like birds since they can fly, I like the ocean since it has no border and I like aurora borealis. Perhaps I'm just too lazy to practice meditation so I like to dedicate my time to SSI’s meaningful work, at least this is a good excuse J . It is really great to be a part of the Institute team!

Alexander Zheleznov – Programmes Direction and Management – Russia

Having been a director of the Institute in Russia for the past 3 years, I am currently responsible for setting up the Traditional Tibetan Medicine Clinic Cabinet in Moscow and for the Fundraising and Public Relations Management related to this Program.

Being involved in the preservation and dissemination of ancient and deep knowledge of the Tibetans makes my life interesting and meaningful.
I don't work for SSI everyday now. I hope someday it'll be the only work I do and to dedicate all my time to it.

I manage my own small company (25 people) in the field of Information Technology, Security and Transportation. I live in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I have two kids (15 and 13). I like going to the gym and snowboarding and I am currently learning Spanish and Tibetan.

Adam Kadmon – Vice Presidency – Australia

My role as Vice President and as one of the directors is to provide leadership and support across all areas of the Shang Shung Institute in Australia, but more importantly to ensure that SSI Australia develops strong connections with the Tibetan communities and organisations that are already operating within this country. My initial focus however will be in assisting our team to develop and promote our Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Language/Translation programs, as well as to organise various Tibetan Art and Cultural events for the people to enjoy here in Australia.

In general I already have a genuine interest in Tibetan Buddhism, Medicine, Language, and Art/Culture – and it is this primarily that has imbued me with the energy and enthusiasm to contribute something towards the development of SSI activities here in Australia over the next few years. Also as a long time member and beneficiary of many courses, translations, and recordings from the Shang Shung Institute in the past I feel honoured to finally have the opportunity to offer something back, and so to that end I hope that through my service I will be able to assist our founder Chögyal Namkhai Norbu to realize his supreme vision for the Shang Shung Institute throughout Australia and the rest of the world.

I currently live in ‘cosmopolitan’ Melbourne, Australia with my loving and supportive partner, and for my day job I work in the Administration/Health Information field as a Clerk and Data Analyst at one of Melbourne’s busiest public hospitals.

Carey Idle – Educational Programs Direction and Management - Australia

I started my adventure in SSI in 2012 when I helped to establish Shang Shung Institute Australia, implementing the infrastructure and starting up the programs. Recently I have been more focused on helping coordinate the Australian aspect of the SSI Tibetan Medicine program based in the USA, establishing the Australian Tibetan Medicine Association. We plan to launch this in 2015. I have worked mainly in the field of complementary medicine and run a clinic practice on the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Oz. I feel very happy and honored to be working with SSI here in Australia. I feel it is a great opportunity to support and preserve the ancient wisdom of Tibetan culture. As is probably clear from the above, I have quite an interest in Tibetan Medicine and eastern therapies! I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and am also involved in music and disabilities work locally.

Damien Pascoe – Arts and Crafts Programs Direction and Informaton Tecnhology Management - Australia

Currently I have been heading the IT Dept for SSI Australia, which has mainly consisted of developing and maintaining our Website, in collaboration with many friends of mine!
I’ve also been running SSI Australia Art Department, which has involved coordinating Thangka art workshops with Tibetan Master Artist Karma Phuntsok. My main interest is in the preservation of Tibetan Culture. I have been studying Thangka Painting for a while under the guidance of Andy Webber and Karma Phuntsok and found much solace within the creation of thangkas, and the richness of their iconography.
Much of this translates to how I feel personally about working for Shang Shung Institute, as I believe Tibetan Culture has a lot to offer to modern people, be it from Tibetan Medicine, thangka painting or lectures on Tibetan history. Working in collaboration with Shang Shung Institute, one of my hopes is to help preserve the 5 Sciences. In the past I worked as a video editor/ animator, but now I have been studying for a while and working on websites. I live in a small country town in Queensland Australia, called Eudlo, weird name right?
The name itself is the Aboriginal term for “eels”, so you can see it’s a very cultural town!
Besides painting a fair bit, and working on websites, I love the Mighty Boosh, and most things with Noel Fielding in it, especially Luxury Comedy.

Shang Shung Publications

Igor Legati – Senior Editor and International Publications Committee Coordinator

After a degree in Biologic Sciences in Turin in 1967 and teaching Natural Sciences to high school students for a few years, I started my career as a translator from English and French, working for some of the major Italian publishers like Einaudi, Mondadori and Ottava.  I joined SSI in 1997 as a writer and coordinator of the entire publication production life cycle. My main activities today within the Shang Shung Institute pertain the work of Shang Shung Publications, where I collaborate choosing the texts to be published and preparing them, together with the team of translators, writers, proofreaders and other editors. As Coordinator of IPC (International Publications Committee) I follow the translation of our products in other languages to guarantee the wide and faithful to original diffusion of the knowledge of Dzogchen. To this aim I also look after publishing rights and agreements. I'm very much interested in the Dzogchen teachings and in the Tibetan culture that guaranteed the original transmission of this precious knowledge. My personal concern is to reproduce the words of the Masters in the best and understandable way in Western languages and I believe the Shang Shung Institute to be the ideal vehicle for achieving this aim. Everything and everybody in SSI are entirely devoted to pursue it. I'm living in Arcidosso, Tuscany, where I moved in 1993 in order to collaborate with Shang Shung Edizioni. I'm very happy of the way the Shang Shung Institute and the Shang Shung Publications are currently developing.

Tiziana Gottardi – Senior Editor - Management of Italian Language Publications

I look after the production of books for Shang Shung Edizioni since 1990. Since 1996 I am responsible to manage and coordinate activities within the publishing house. Currently I mostly look after the editorial line dedicated to Dzogchen practitioners. I am also involved in the layout design of some of the books aimed at the greater public. Recently I managed the project and the workgroup involved in the publishing of the book “The Temple of Great Contemplation”, dedicated to the Gompa building in Merigar, which gathers the history of all the knowledge lineages and traditions here represented. I was also responsible for the book layout. To be useful to others through the dissemination of knowledge is for me a fantastic opportunity. I live since 1982 in Merigar, where I run a small holiday farm. I am a Yantra Yoga instructor.

Artur Skura – Public Editions Management

My aim is to help Shang Shung Publications to make different aspects of knowledge present in the Tibetan culture, from medicine to Tibetan Buddhism, and especially the essential teachings of Dzogchen, available to as many people as possible, on all continents. I had the great honor and pleasure to work towards this aim in the last 3 years.

Nancy Simmons – Senior Editor - English Language Publications

I am responsible for editing SSP English language books, in particular books meant for public distribution and for checking the English editing work of others to the extent time permits. I am also engaged in finding and training talented and disciplined additions to our (prevalently) volunteer editing team. I am happy and honored that my work involves an intense daily contact with the sacred meanings of Dharma and that I am able to support myself in a way that is valuable for others. I have had a passion for clear and appropriately worded writing since my earliest days. When I went to work on the SSI staff in January 2008, I joyfully made good use in this regard of the Stakhanovite work ethic I inherited from my father.

Speaking of my earliest and pivotal influences, when I graduated from the University of Chicago in the English Language and Literature department in 1954, I was hired as a junior editor by the famous Encyclopedia Britannica whose main offices were in Chicago. Earlier as a high school student in Milwaukee, I worked my way up in four years to the position of editor-in-chief of my school’s large weekly newspaper with its circulation of 2000. These experiences were the seed and bedrock of my lifelong love for literature and for my continuing interest and pleasure in bettering, in the most direct way I can find, language that requires some help to reach its full expressive power.

I am based near Merigar and move between Tenerife, the environs of Conway, and Iwadono. I appreciate beautiful ceramics, the poetry of John Donne, and Japanese hair ornaments. I confess to feeling more at ease writing than speaking when it comes to communicating even semi-official matters. Also, being 81 is not so bad.

Susan Schwarz – Editor - English Language Publications

“Time is passing.” As often as I have heard this being reminded to us, I let plenty of it pass by before making the leap from being an occasional full-time editorial volunteer to officially joining the Shang Shung Publications staff. It took years, to be exact. And still I think it could be called a leap, because the decision came spontaneously, several months before I thought it would.
So I am thankful that circumstances have permitted me to indefinitely suspend my all-too-thriving business of translating and editing documents related to finance, law, public relations, and art and instead concentrate on putting precious words into print.

Paolo Fassoli – Graphic Designer and Photographer

After the studies of Graphic Design at the IED – European Design Institute in Milan, I have been working since 1993 as graphic designer and art director for many communication agencies.

I have been a graphic designer and photographer for Shang Shung Publications since 1997, diving into many projects and activities, like the design of covers for many of our publications (notably the Tun Book, The Tibetan Yoga of Movement V1 and V2 DVD, The Mirror, together with many others) and  graphics for our branding and events (posters, fliers, etc). My latest work is the complete design of the celebratory book about the Gonpa (The Temple of Great Contemplation) in Merigar. As a good visual communication is really fundamental in our world, I always try to produce a fresh and clear image in order to inform the people properly about our activities at the Institute. I collaborate with the Shang Shung Publications in the spirit of service to the cause of helping the value and richness of the Tibetan culture becoming known.
I try to be a simple person with a simple lifestyle. I like to travel and observe the beauty of the world through my camera and I am now based in the countryside outside Barcelona, Spain.
In the recent years I rediscovered my first love, photography, still my biggest passion.  I love sunlight.

Felice Storgato - Archivist

Within the SSI Archive I look after the ingestion and inventory of new digital audio and video records within our repository. Almost every week at the Institute we receive from all over the world recordings, transcriptions, and videos of events related to Tibetan Medicine, Arts, History and especially Dzogchen teachings that need to be correctly saved and catalogued for present and future use. I work for SSI as a volunteer, with commitment towards the knowledge the Institute making available and the people who may benefit from it.

I teach Economics and Law to high school students in Arcidosso, a small town in Tuscany, where I live since 1995, moving from my birth place in Veneto, northern Italy. I'm a loner, but I enjoy very much all situations of genuine conviviality like making free music with friends.

Mateusz Sylwester Kocylowski – Customer Care and Logistics Quartermaster

Hi! I am Mateusz, I am Polish but since 10 years I work and live in Tuscany, by the Shang Shung Institute’s headquarters. At the Institute I am responsible to answer requests and orders from our readers and distributors everywhere in the world. I look after our webshop and make sure books and all the other products get to their users as quickly as possible, online and through shipment, coordinating all the providers work needed to get the job done. I also look after the distribution of Archive materials to users who request them. From my vantage point I see the entire life cycle of our work at SSI. I have always dreamt of living in a place like Adzamgar, one of those places in the last century Tibetan history, where students lived working and applying their knowledge together. I chose to live here since this place reminds me so much of that beauty. Working with a team of what I consider my friends and making people satisfied by granting them the possibility to access knowledge that they find truly helpful gives me great joy. It’s hard to be luckier than this!

I work very closely with the other members of the Shang Shung Institute UK team on various projects: I am responsible for a lot of the photography and image processing that we need.
I am much involved with the organisation and delivery of our SOAS lectures and courses, working also on the transcription of proceedings from conferences and talks.
In the past I have created maps for ʺZhang Zhung: Images from a lost Kingdomʺ and currently I am creating 3d mapping for the Tibet exhibition in Arcidosso.

I bring critical and creative values to my work.

I am a retired architect and director, and I have actually designed several large gompas, including Sechen Tennyi Dargyi Ling in Kathmandu. I have made four trips to Tibet and have travelled extensively in China, India and South-East Asia etc. I speak some Tibetan and can work with Chinese, though not very rapidly! I studied Tibetan at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu.
I have been working for many years on the geography of Tibet. I was awarded a Leverhulme Research Scholarship at SOAS, London University between 1995 and 1997.

I'm quite jovial, I think. I live in Queen's Park, London. You can probably work out what my interest are from above. I like sharing whisky.

Bret Bourman – Communication and Administration - USA

I am with the Shang Shung Institute in the USA, working in the fields of Administration and Communication.  I administer to the Institute and oversee Instructional Design Development, Web Development, Video Production and Post Production.  I am also personal assistant to Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo, International Director of SSI School of Tibetan Medicine.

Collaborating on the Institute’s goals and objectives as fostered by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu for the preservation of Tibetan culture are wonderful circumstances with which to work. The Institute benefits others and one can clearly see how this functions by observing the Institute’s School of Tibetan Medicine: the medical school educates physicians who are then able to be of service to many people who are in turn better able to help themselves and others, benefiting an even greater number of people. This is a direct example.

My professional experience includes: Visual Artist, Principal Ballet Dancer, Art Director, Business Principal and Health Care Professional.
