Sei qui: HomeAbout UsOur Mission

The Shang Shung Institute exists for the preservation of Tibetan culture and to translate Tibetan books into Western languages. Through the Shang Shung Institute we are trying to do something to maintain the survival of Tibetan culture and understanding. Shang Shung, the name of the Institute, reflects the source of Tibetan culture and history - it was known as a great empire throughout the Orient and the study of Shang Shung is extremely important if we are to understand the great antiquity, the unique nature and the universal importance of Tibetan culture, past and present.

Our Mission

The Shang Shung Institute for Tibetan Studies is a non-profit institution, non-political and non-religious.

We strive for a vital Tibetan culture, rooted in its own tradition and able through exchange and communication to contribute to the improvement of the life and evolution of individuals in a contemporary global society where the different cultures coexist in harmony and enrich each other.

The mission of the Foundation is to participate in the general effort to ensure the continuity of Tibetan culture and the way of life of the Tibetan communities both in their historical, traditional content and in their present global evolution by establishing, in collaboration with custodians of Tibetan traditions, experts, scholars, artists, academic institutions and civil society organizations, programs and initiatives aimed at supporting the language, the traditional knowledge and the preservation of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage and by promoting at the same time the international appreciation of Tibetan culture’s contribution to the world cultural heritage and human enrichment.
